Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Borhasurbeh Agricultural Association is a community-based organization in Bombali District. Recent years have seen the organization taking environmental protection as its core competence having received skills development training from universities in Sierra Leone by its core staff members and having demonstrated expertise in environmental management and climate smart agricultures in various parts of the District. The organization continues to enjoy a good partner position in the fabrication of the Elsa Stove; partnering with GIZ, the Ministry of Energy, Technical and Vocational Institutes in the district.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Borhasurbeh Agricultural Association will leverage on built experience and community net-working to enhance training facilitation and coordination. The regional offices which are well equipped with community workers will serve as spot workers in sharing knowledge with community beneficiaries and doing feed ?backing which in turn will serve for learning and steering of the project objectives. We also intend to train community mobilizers who in turn will train community beneficiaries on the use of the intervention packages. These will permanently reside within the communities throughout the project period.

Notable Community Participation

Community Participation will be ensured through community forums and discussions, involving key stakeholders like local authorities and other operational institutions. Activities like the collection of feed stock, production and use of stove will be carried out by community beneficiaries especially women. Planning and implementation and the periodic evaluation of the project and feed-backing are such activities that community members will contribute to the implementation of the project

Policy Impact

Community stakeholders will be engaged to formulate environmental friendly bye laws for the attention of the District council.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The communication strategy of the project will be periodic information sharing through community meetings, dialogue sessions, trainings, the public media and written reports. The communication strategy will change according to prevailing circumstances. Experience sharing and learning trips will make room for replication of best practices. The targets will be communities, local Councils, Government Line ministries, and Agencies other development partners and donor partners. Community schools being integral partners to the project will also serve as agents of communication, by that way helping to further create awareness on environmental protection through peer education.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The local language will be used for training and conducting monitoring exercises to involve the indigenous people. A thorough understanding of the different concerns, experiences, capacities and needs of local women and men will shape the way to analyze, plan, implement and evaluate the project

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will introduce stove production and sales as an alternative livelihood and the biochar from the stoves will enhance soil amendment that would give more crop production which means more income. Women and youth will be re-oriented to the sale of the feed stock and for the stoves as they were doing for charcoal.

Gender Focus

The project will promote greater equality among women and men. It will ensure greater participation of women in all aspects of the intervention such as disaster management, production and marketing of ELSA/KILN Stoves. Women and youth are central in the planning, implementation and monitoring of all activities. The project will focus on building women?s leadership skills to be active in decision making especially on issues that affect them because in time of disaster men and women suffer differently
