Promoting Landscape Restoration, Agroforestry, Livestock and Ecosystem Management for Sustainable Food Systems, Income Generation and Dignified Livelihoods
This proposed project is specifically designed to strengthen community participation and contributions to improve sustainable forest landscape restoration, forest management and improve management of natural forests in Bargbewe chiefdom in Bo districts through promoting agroforestry initiatives, build up community forest governance frameworks, and promote better understanding of landscape restoration and forest governance approaches. This project intervention seeks to enhance food security and resilience of targeted farming communities through climate smart agricultural schemes streamlined with post harvesting processing, value addition and biodiversity conservation co-benefits. Key project interventions will include planting of 30,000 assorted economic and ecological trees on depleted forest landscape to promote afforest and conservation of forest natural biodiversity, extending capacity building training and awareness raising campaigns on sustainable forest governance and landscape management, strengthen the capacity of smallholders farmers (both technical and material capacity) that will promote the engagement of smallholder farmers in climate resilient agricultural productivity, post-harvest processing and value addition. Support the construction of grain stores, drying floors, seed banks and agro-processing centers to promote local seeds multiplication, food sufficiency and food security. However, this project intervention will also seek to support local farmers with tools, materials, technologies, machines and equipment that will promote their engagement in post-harvest processing and value chain agricultural productivity. Project overall goal is to promote landscape restoration, and sustainable forest management practices from improved food production and ecosystem services. This project intervention has 5 main components viz, component 1 (Improving community knowledge and response to governance of forest resources ),component 2( Enhancing food sufficiency and food security through climate resilient agricultural practices),component3( promote afforestation of depleted forest landscapes for biodiversity conservation),component 4(promote the participation, contribution and benefits of smallholder farmers in post/harvest processing and value chain agricultural productivity) and component 5( Strengthening coordination collaboration and networking for effective delivery of community forest governance initiatives) Key expected results including 300 hectares of land areas have adopted sustainable land management practices due to project intervention,300 hectares of previously depleted lands are afforested and restored for agricultural production,400 hectares of forest lands are brought under sustainable forest governance and Green Gas Emissions are mitigated in targeted landscapes, 100 local farmers are engaged in post-harvest processing and value chain agricultural productivity, 10 project targeted communities are engaged in intensive food sufficiency and food security drives driven by climate resilient agricultural initiatives. Food sufficiency and food security drives are enhanced and sustained in 10 project target communities
Conclusively, this proposed project intervention supports and compliment several government policies, plans and strategies that focus on food sufficiency, food security, biodiversity conservation, economic development, and ecosystem and forest landscape restoration. This project intervention also support the goal and objectives of Sierra Leone National Determined Contribution, and Sierra Leone medium Term National Development Plan 2018 -2023

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Impact
-Project Activities made provision for the conduction of 4 weeks policy literacy and analysis Sierra Leone Forest Management Policy of 2014, Sierra Leone Biodiversity Policy of 2016, National Protected Area Policy of 2003, the Sierra Leone Environmental Protection Policy 2009 and The Goals, aims and policy objectives of the Ministry of Environments, targeting and benefitting 100 stakeholders drawn from 20 beneficiary communities. This policy literacy will increase the awareness and knowledge of community stakeholders and indigenous people about the existence of these policies and the provisions contained therein. Improved community awareness about these policies will also improve community participation in supporting the implementation of these policies at community levels.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Best management practices, success stories, challenges, methodologies, techniques, strategies and lessons learnt during the implementation of this project will be shared with other CSOs,local and other international partners in Sierra Leone development that are working in agro-ecology, organic farming, climate smart agriculture, climate smart-agro ecology, climate resilient agriculture and afforestation programs for replication. Project innovative approach like inclusion of environmental conservation laws within customary systems and inclusion of gender equality, youth, children and disability rights in environmental conservation programs will set the stage for new learning. Conclusively, project outcomes will also be shared with local policy makers as a means to facilitate informed policy making so that project outcomes can be integrated into broader strategies and multi-sectorial work.
