The project is titled ??Strengthening the livability and beauty of the environment at the same time use waste management as an enterprise for sustainable development??. The main aim of the project is to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. The project objectives include:
1) Reduce the use of harmful chemicals (i.e., mercury) and destructive practices (i.e., dredging) in gold mining
2) Increase recyclable material produced by communities that can be converted building materials with WHH provided recycling machines.
3) Improve community members (i) knowledge of regulations and health risks associated with the use of mercury/dredging in gold mining (ii) and beliefs about the importance of recycling.
The project aim at setting out steps to take to achieve a toxic-free environment, and ensure that chemicals that affect human health and the environment are not utilized so we can save future generation and contribute to clean international water free of pollution. The project will be implemented in five (5) chiefdoms (Nimikoro, Nimiyama, Sandor, Gbense and Tankoro chiefdoms) in Kono District. The project will collaborate with the Government line Ministries Departments and Agencies to define a set of regulatory and non-regulatory measures that will control the trade. In addition, the project seeks to promote sustainable waste management systems that will be consistent with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation standards. This will be done through enterprises (recycle materials will be purchased for manufacturing industries) to promote the reduction of pollution and enhance a clean environment and improves healthy living.
