Connecting Solar Electricity for Small Scale Farmers in Motlhabaneng Village and Surrounding Settlements and Address Overgrazing and Greenhouse Emission and Foster Biodiversity Conservation.
The Project aims to use solar installation for small scale farmers in Bobirwa sub-district as a sustainable solution to environmental problems of overgrazing and greenhouse emission. Specifically, the project aims to install solar electricity in one borehole shared by syndicate horticulture farmers and in three boreholes for syndicate pastoral farmers. The installation of solar energy to small arable scale farmers will serve to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with using fossil fuels (petrol and diesel) to power irrigation systems. The project will install solar electricity to power fencing of the field in addition to powering the borehole. Electric fencing will help to reduce crop damage from wild animals and hence not only improve crop yields but also help to reduce human wildlife conflicts. For small pastoral farmers, the installation of solar energy to power distribution of water from shared boreholes to individual farmers will reduce congestion of cattle and other livestock at shared drinking points and hence reduce overgrazing in the area surrounding the shared borehole. The installation of power on the borehole of the pastoral farmers will also reduce carbon dioxide emission (greenhouse gas) associated with using fossil fuels for daily pumping of water to supply the livestock. Installation of solar electricity will greatly reduce the production costs associated with buying petrol or diesel fuel that farmers currently use for water pumping. This will reduce the production costs and boost production capacity of the farmers. The anticipated improved production for both pastoral and arable yields due to solar installation will not only benefit the farmers but the general welfare of the communities in Motlhabaneng, especially women and the unemployed youth, as food security and employment opportunities will be created, consequently releasing pressure on natural resources. Overall, this project aims to use one sustainable, solar installation, to address multiple environment challenges in Botswana, contributing to global efforts for environmental protection and climate change response.
