Strengthening the economic benefits of turtle ecotourism in north east Trinidad
Strengthening the economic benefits of turtle ecotourism in north east Trinidad
The project addresses the design and implementation of a community-based survey of visitors to turtle-nesting beaches in north-east Trinidad during the 1999 turtle nesting season. Interviews with visitors will be recorded on standardised questionnaires by trained representatives of each of the four community-based turtle-conservation organisations located in north-east Trinidad. The questionnaire data will be recorded on a database specifically prepared for the project. The data will be used at the completion of the nesting season to identify opportunities for increasing the economic benefits to the organisations and their immediate communities. The project report will comprise a survey report, a policy documents and a lessons-learnt document for distribution to key stakeholders. The policy document in particular will be used as the basis for discussion between the community organisations and relevant government authorities to amend/introduce policy to effect increased economic benefits to the target communities.

Grant funds would be used for stipends to CBO-based interviewers, contracting of technical expertise (database design, data entry and analysis), local travel, and material and equipment.
