Sustainable Land Management for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (SLM-4-CCAM) in ten (10) communities in Bonthe District, Southern Sierra Leone
Supporting Entrepreneurship & Economic Development-SEED/SL propose to implement the action titled: Sustainable Land Management for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (SLM-4-CCAM) in ten(10) communities (Matakan, Mo-Charles, Kabati, Senehun Gbloh, Talia Yawbeko, Hahun, Mo-Albert, Labrama, Njagbema, Momaya) in Bonthe District, Southern Sierra Leone. The general objective of the action is to contribute to increase crop productivity, farmers adaptability to and mitigation of climate change through sustainable land management in cassava-groundnut based intercropping systems. The specific objectives are: Objective 1 to generate and disseminate evidence to inform climate change adaptation and mitigation actions in agriculture, and Objective 2 to increase the resilience of smallhoder cassava farmers to effect climate change through enhanced knowledge and skills on sustainable land management. This action is deemed important especially in Sierra Leone, where one of the major challenges in agriculture is its capacity to ensure sustainable food and nutrition security for its growing population in the context of resource scarcity, aggravated by the impacts of climate change. Therefore our action seeks to achieve the key expected results; Result 1) conduct one formative study to assess 50 farmers? and 5 agricultural extension staff? perceptions on climate change and its impact on crop production and productivity, Result 2) set up two on-farm trial to evaluate the efficacy of cassava legume intercropping systems as an innovation for climate change adaptation and mitigation, through action-research, Result 3) conduct two capacity building workshops and facilitate targeting 100 famers and 5 MAFF staff, one exchange visit to build the capacity of one hundred(100) farmers and five(5)agricultural extension staffs on sustainable land management in cassava legume based cropping system and Result 4. Organize two workshops at district level and write article for publication in reputable international journals to disseminate key findings and lessons learnt

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Gender equality: the targeting strategy gives specific attention to women ? up to 60% of the participants will be women. The action will address some of the barriers rural women face including improvement of technical knowledge, economic options, access to productive assets.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The action will build capacities of smallholder farmers to adopt practices that are highly productive and agriculturally sustainable. This ensures increased incomes that enhance the continued use of the innovation by resource poor farmers. The innovation itself is not expensive, as it does not require high injection of inputs, such as the application of chemical fertilizers or pesticides
