Creating Equal Access to Clean Energy and Climate Adaptation for Vulnerable Women
This project is a joint initiative between Women in Energy, Network of People living with HIV (NETHIPS)
and the Consortium on the Rights of Key Affected Populations (CARKAP) with financial and technical
support from UNAIDS. The project seeks to increase women living with HIV, sex workers and other
vulnerable groups, who are often left behind in national development and climate adaption, access to
clean energy solutions and strengthen them for climate change action in their communities.
Under the leadership of Women in Energy, this project will be implemented in Bo, Port Lokko and
Western Rural districts reaching a primary target of 60 vulnerable women and their households and
impacting on over 1800 individuals in the targeted districts.
The project will seek to build capacities of vulnerable women to manufacture and use highly efficient
energy saving improved cookstove; provide economic opportunities for income generation and train
them as community animators for climate action. A 6-day training will be organized to train 20
vulnerable women selected from each of the three targeted districts. Working with the respective
district councils, trainees will be supported to set up manufacturing points as part of economic
empowerment for environmental sustainability. Through a carefully structured and incentive system
the project beneficiaries will be trained a to carryout community sensitization and promotion of
sustainable forest management, low carbon energy and reduction of land degradation.
The benefits to be derived from the project will include introduction of cleaner cooking alternatives,
employment creation for young vulnerable women, improved cookstove stove production, distributors,
and marketing agents, trees planting for environmental renewal, training, engaging them as,
distributors for solar lamps.. The project helps to tackle global environmental challenges, inclusion,
promote low carbon technologies for energy access and efficiency aimed at reducing emission and
pollution. Also, conservation of carbon stock (carbon credit) at the community level to reduce the
carbon footprint by planting trees for climate mitigation, capacity building and identify energy
entrepreneur.
The project will be first of its kind in the country, targeting women living with HIV, sex workers and
vulnerable women with sustainable and renewable energy solutions. It is expected that this project will
serve as a pilot and the lessons learnt will inform the rollout of project interventions to other districts
in the country.
The project is expected to be implemented over 14 months period.
