An Integrated Community Development Approach to Biodiversity Conservation and a Viable Ecotourism Enterprise in Grande Riviere
The project will serve to strengthen the Grande Riviere Tourism Development Organisation (GRTDO) and to encourage a well-planned, integrated approach to sustainable community development in Grande Riviere that other organisations can adopt. Project activities include development of an organisational management plan, a business plan, an eco-tourism feasibility study, a market analysis, a conservation management strategy, a fundraising strategy and documenting the process. The SGP grant support coincided with the contribution of a visitor information center and beach facilities by the governmental Tourism and Industrial Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago (TIDCO) to the GRTDO. The SGP grant support and the infrastructure provided will strengthen the local community's capacity to protect the areas rich biodiversity, including the nesting population of the endangered leatherback turtle, and promote the community-based ecotourism enterprise and sustainable livelihoods for community members.
