Building a Common Understanding Between GEF/SGP and Stakeholders for Achieving Sustainable Environmental Management

The project aims at building capacity for potential and existing project proponents to implement sustainable SGP projects as a meanss of creating great impact and increasing visibility of the programme as it has been running since 1992. In addition, it will introduce the new shifts in Operational Phase Three (OP III) of GEF/SGP and its linkage to an impact oriented Country Programme Strategy (CPS) to stakeholders. Through the exchange and sharing of information on best practices and lessons learnt from previous projects, the project will inform the implementation of OP III and the impacts oriented CPS. Finally, the project will ensure that avenues for partnerships and resource mobilisation with other financial institutions (Government, Donors, Private Companies, Community Based Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations) are strengthened, explored and forged.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

A significant number of people cutting across different tribes attended the workshop and participated equally even in making presentations.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Emanating from the workshop the project proponents appreciate co-financing as a way to ensure project sustainability. Other implementing partners that had attended the workshop showed interest in working with the program.

Gender Focus

It was notable that the workshop was officiated by ladies, the Deputy Permanent Secretary Ms Tuti-Tsiang and Deputy Residenet Representative Ms Viola Morganand two more ladies made presentations. The role ofd women were recognised and found to be pivotal in improving livelihoods and ensuring project sustainability.

Capacity - Building Component

Potential project proponents were exposed to projects with varying degrees of success. The proponents were able to articulate both the success and difficulties of their projects to stakeholders. This sharpened their presentation skills and offered others a chance to have first hand information on project implementation. The staskeholders were able to contribute in shaping the programme in Operational Phase Three

Policy Influence

The participation of CBOs is likely to influence the adoption of the envesaged policy on Community Based Natural Resource Managenment. The exhibition will send a clear message to policy makers that if CBOs are impowered they can suistain themselves, therefore there is need to transfer natural resources to them.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The presentations on Controlling bush encroachment, Battery charging services using solar battery charging stations, Energy conservation in households and industry, Sustainable utilisation of thatching grass, Sustainable utilisation of veld products and Wildlife conflict with communities in the environs of Chobe National Park have a bearing on livelihoods. The presentations were meant to show that livelihoods can be improved and sustained through sustainable management of natural resources and/or environment. Some of the projects generate the much needed income which goes directly to project proponents hence making the projects sustainable

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The presentations that were made by project proponents were represented all the five thematic areas. There was a lot of appreciation by the stakeholders. In addition, part of the workshop appeared in the Botswana Telveision twice, Radio Botswana news and an interview with Gabz fm increase the reach of the programme.

Linkages gef projects

The projects had linkages with other GEF projects through exhibition.A number of exhibitors were funded by GEF/SGP and this was important as it helped the workshop participant to be able to appreciate the work that is being done by GEF/SGP and also use the experience to upscale their projects

Policy Impact

The workshop participants heard first hand information from the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism about the status of the Community Based Natural Resources Management Policy which paves a way for a lot of the Small Grants Programme inititiaves and activities

Project Results

A workshop to build common understanding between GEF/SGP and stakeholders to achive suistainable environmental management was organised and at a large extent the workshop was a success;there was presantation of projects from all focal areas by NGOs and CBOs and display /exhibition of projects material and products from projects, expert presented on the current situation in each focal area.

The workshop objectives were fully achieved as it provided a platform for dialoque with other financial partners and as such increased understanding for opportunities appropriate for collaboration co-financing. The participant ability to inform the GEF/SGP Operational Phase 3 country programme strategy clearly indicated understanding of its new guidelines. it is also clear that paticipantsappreciated lessons from previous programme beneficiaries.

The participant would benefit from the workshop in many ways which include understanding of the Operational Phase 3 GEF/SGP application format, process and guidelines and also the implementation of suistainable Small Grants Programme projects.Most of the participants especially community based organisation will be able to use the knowledge gained from the workshop to upscale their projects through GEF/SGP.

The remarks or lessons learned included the fact that in future there is a need to use facilitators well versed with the subject matter and also to send technical presentations/summaries to the workshop participants to familiarise themselves with concepts and terms.
