Capacity Building and Development of a Land Use Management Plan for Mopipi/Mokoboxane Community Rangeland Resource Use Area
The project aims at producing a land use and rangeland resource management plans that will guide the process of developing community based management systems. It is critical that community based sustainable range management and/or land use systems be developed and this could be achieved by empowering the resource users (communities) to control and manage the resources. This will assist the community to rehabilitate their degraded rangelands and diversify livelihood options. Alternative livelihoods will be exploited with activities to improve livestock production and marketing, and community based tourism.
The project will conserve and rehabilitate globally significant biodiversity in three Boteti dry land areas through preventing land degradation and developing sustainable management systems. Indigenous vegetation and the biodiversity of the semi arid zone are of global significance because the plants are animals are adapted to the harsh environment.
The project proponents will benefit from rehabilitated lands and sustainable management systems. The project will develop and pilot models that can be replicated in other communal rangeland areas. The rangelands are important as they are endowed with veld products which sustain rural livelihoods and could be developed and marketed to diversify the economic base.
