Waste Water Treatment and Recycling at Motse Wa Badiri Camphill in Otse
Waste Water Treatment and Recycling at Motse Wa Badiri Camphill in Otse
The project aims to reduce the threat of pollution to the Otse aquifer posed by waste water disposal at Camphill through waste water treatment by a constructed wetland. The treated effluent will be used for irrigation. The project will have the additional benefit of reducing the stress placed on the aquifer and hence prolonging its lifetime as water abstractions will go down due to waste water recycling.

The project will introduce an affordable and environmentally sound technology to limit contamination of a water body. Inadequate waste water management and handling currently places the Otse aquifer under serious pollution threat that could render it useless for human consumption due to introduction of pollutants such as nutrients, pathogens and organic matter.

The project will empower Camphill community to effectively manage their waste water resources through pollution prevention and waste water recycling. As Camphill community is largely people with disabilities, the skills acquired from the project are very crucial in the economic generating activities of the centre.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
It is important that the community understand both the benefits and hazards of the system hence informational materials such as posters and pamphlets will be developed to aid the community in understanding the system (the materials will be available in English,Setswana and sign language).Motse -wa-Badiri is a very public institution, which regularly receives guests, therefore the waste recycling system will be widely advertised to the public which will greatly assist in its replication in future.
Capacity - Building Component
Motse wa Badiri intends to use the waste water treatment and recycling system to educate the rest of the community on the importance of recycling water.Training will be an essintial component of the project and it will start with the training of technicians.Vocational training is offered as an inservice training and it last as long as the person challenged by disability need to master the job:information visits will be carried out to similar projects at Tlokweng, TCE and Thusano Lefatsheng before the design and this is important because it will help the community to identify what there like from the two projects and this can be fed to the design process.
